The results of a florist and a photographer having a little fun on a hot Sunday afternoon:

Sometimes the most beautiful things can happen when you least plan it. I had some unused anemones from my wonderful wholesaler and a mounting collection of tea tins. I called Annabella (of Annabella Charles) and asked her opinion as to what to do... and this mini-shoot was born. It was so much fun working with a color palate that as unintentional and yet naturally very appealing. We each contributed our own bits and pieces including an old wooden tool box I acquired from S.Y. Wilson's Antique store in Arlington and some greens from my neighbor's garden!
*And a little note of thanks to our husbands who watched the kids while we got some flower/photo creativity out of our systems!

Day After Sessions: Karl and Mary

If your wedding photos don't look exactly as you had planned or you want to do a little something different with your wedding dress and personal flowers, it's never too late for a "day after" photo session. In this case Karl and Mary worked with Annabella Charles Photography to capture their true love in these breathtaking photos. The popular and gorgeous blog Love and Lavender featured this very photogenic couple today along with some of my favorite creations. The bouquet alone featured succulents, flawless large white garden roses, white peonies, grey dusty miller leaves, wax flower, rabbit tail grass, and blue cypress berries from my favorite tree near our home. The boutonniere was fashioned from greens around a pair of nails tied in a knot. There were ribbons, lace, teacups, vines, and much more!

Southern Bride Magazine: Dream Derby Part 3

The final grouping from out Kentucky Derby inspired photo shoot for Southern Bride:
I loved making a floral skirt for our derby table. It reminded me of my competition days in San Francisco where my classmates and I made all manner of wearable flower costumes and accessories for an art gallery. I guess one could say I am getting a lot of experience in that field. Wouldn't mind creating some living blossom hats for a fashion show some day!
The Derby team and I sincerely hope that our inspiration shoots help brides-to-be channel their inner style, their creativity, and their ability to plan of the big day with flourish. Details can be daunting, but when you have the right help and a sense of what you love (or don't love), your wedding will be perfectly you. And dears, that is what inspiration shoots are truly all about.

Southern Bride Magazine: Dream Derby Part 2

The Food!
Ziparo's catering brought in the most delicious feast and since it was a photo shoot... we couldn't touch it for a while! I am including a photo of my favorite layered salad because it is what I ate the most of while feverishly putting flowers together for the lounge. In a horse stall. (I brought a lot of hand wipes)
Then after the lounge session there was one large item I had my eye on. Yes, the Bourbon cake! I wanted to take the entire thing home until I had hiccups for a week (alcohol cake!) but alas, I brought two slices home for me and my husband and we vowed to get another one some day because it was so unusually delicious. I say that because I am a cake purist. I like icing and cake, no need to marinate it in anything. Well I was a cake purist until Ziparo's got ahold of me. So let your mouth water over these photos from Annabella Charles.

PS Did you notice the photos on the wall behind the champagne? They are of horses and family members of our own Clint Sidle from Mahaffey Tent & Party! Champagne Wishes to all!

Southern Bride Magazine: Dream Derby Details Part 1

The newest issue of Southern Bride Magazine is on the stands and here are some of my favorite personal flower photos from the Dream Derby Inspiration Photo Shoot. The planning for a shoot is usually months before the actual images are taken, which is then a few more months before they are published and ready to sell. It seems so surreal to visit these photos again after having to keep them secret for nearly 4 months. It was very difficult not to share when I had so many coral and pink rose loving brides this spring and summer!

A Must Read: JDRF Promise Ball 2011

As the sun set on April 30, 2011 the JRDF promise ball began and for the second year in a row I was a part of the event. I would like to take you back to last year on April 10 when I was honored to have a seat at last year's dinner and learned what my time and flowers stood for. I had just found out my own son had severe food allergies and there were now so many items that could poison him. Needless to say that night as I watched the stories of those parents who came home for the first time after receiving the Type 1 diabetes diagnosis from the doctor, I felt a kinship. I too came home and looked around the kitchen thinking, "what am I going to feed this child tonight? What am I going to feed him this week?" Then came the guilt and sadness because my son would eventually grow out of most of his allergies, and the children I was watching would only get worse as they went through the shock of puberty, the insulin increases, and ultimately the life events with stress or even childbirth that would take a serious toll on their bodies. I began to understand just what the "fuss" was all about. The things we have all taken for granted, eating without worry, exercise, feeling well; these are all things that children and adults with diabetes have an hourly reminder of.

On April 30, Dr. Julie Kate Webster spoke at this year's ball. She told her own story, diagnosed at 12 she still persued what was even a stressful education on healthy individuals and became a doctor. Most medical residents will tell you how hard that is. She got married. Most normal brides will tell you how stressful that is. She also took a chance with her life twice and had children. She has a husband who understands how delicate the balance of her life is every day and that she may not be lucky enough to see her grandchildren. These are all life decision that most of us have made, (education paths, marriage, family planning), but when a person has type 1 diabetes it works itself into every little decision from the daily, "what can I eat this moment?" to the lifetime, "will I see my grandchildren?". As humans we know nothing is guaranteed for any of us, but I can't help but attend these programs and see just how lucky I am at this moment. It was heartbreaking to see the Jr. Ambassadors, beautiful and handsome in their dresses, turn around with an insulin pump tucked into their satin and chiffon. A not so tiny reminder of the life ahead of them if there is no hope or no cure for this. I think the scariest part of diabetes is that it's not just genetic, it's not predictable, and insulin is no guarantee of a long life ahead of those who have it. The reality of hospital stays, heart problems, other organs failing and even amputations make the future so uncertain for those beautiful boys and girls I saw. I want for them the same freedoms I have: to live, love, and marry without fear. People with diabetes just want to live the same normal lives as all of us do. What is amazing to me it that bravely they do not complain about the fear, the pain, and the sick feelings they go through daily and make it easy for us to not even notice their struggles. I strongly encourage support of this worthy cause, but more I encourage educating yourself on what exactly the "fuss" is about for Juvenile Diabetes and for all manner of diseases that affect our children. You will be a better person for it in your community and in not taking your own daily health for granted. I know I am realizing this with every passing week.

I am humbled and yet so proud to say that Haute Horticulture, partnered with some of the best names in Memphis, currently has 6 photos (1 tabletop, 5 lounge) in their new Wedding Style Magazine Website Inspirations Gallery. I have been purchasing that big beautiful magazine for nine years since I was engaged and dreaming about the florals and tables capes I saw in every jaw dropping issue. It inspired my own wedding design and continues to inspire me today in my work. Since the age of the e-bride, Wedding Style magazine has gone digital with more platinum resources and photos. This is truly a wonderful day for all of the vendors involved in these featured events!

For the second year in a row, I have been asked to decorate the head tables at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Spring fundraising banquet. This year they had Jason Sehorn as their guest speaker. I have to admit I probably only saw him as a defensive back (football) for the Giants when he was playing against my favorite team the Washington Redskins. He had a lot to say to inspire the young athletes who attended and he sure was handsome. There was quite the photo op line after the event! Special thanks to Melissa who took time from her busy schedule to come assist in the setup. It was fun but went fast! -Karin

Sunny April Wedding Part 2: Relaxed Reception

My most recent couple Andy and Becky were married last weekend among all their closest friends and family. The day was perfect, but wouldn't have been so easy had it not been for the hard behind the scenes work of the coordinator, Patti Braswell, as well as the accommodating owners and staff of Vinegar Jim's in Arlington. With their blessing, we set out to transform the restaurant only slightly from a rustic cabin atmosphere to a slightly more feminine decor. I liken it to a beautiful woman who doesn't have to wear makeup, but who catches your attention in a new spring dress. And as always, the food at Vinegar Jim's was delicious!

This past weekend was the true beginning of Spring in Arlington, TN. My dear neighbor's daughter walked down the aisle this sunny Saturday near our cozy downtown square and I was honored to be a part of their big day. The professional photographs will be coming in a few weeks, but I couldn't help but post some of my favorites from my own camera. What a photogenic couple! I want to say a special thank you to Wayne, Patti Braswell, Melissa, Molly, and Blake for all the help for the early a.m. setup. It was well worth beating the sun to rise!

Spring Sangria: John and Jenn

When I first met Jenn she described her wedding colors as "sangria" and Cool Water purple roses (her favorite). I have since used the word sangria about a hundred times to make sure that the flowers were indeed like a rich summer wine punch. One look at the harmonious hues of the sneak preview photos from Annabella Charles Photography, and you will see why these colors were so important to our bride.

The wedding and reception were at Hunt Phelan. (Side note: my husband wanted me to title this entry "That Luvin' Phelan" but I just couldn't do it!) Every detail was expertly managed and designed by Social Butterflies. I don't think we could have done it without their expert experience to pull us through some major weather back up plans. I am certain not a single guest noticed all of the changes made at the last minute. The wedding blended seamlessly into the reception while the rain clouds parted just in time for Jenn to walk down her rose petal aisle and marry her beloved. Personally I can't think of a better way to start the season of 2011 with such great vendors and friends and such a wonderful couple. Congratulations to John and Jenn!!!

New Year's Eve: Micah and Ruthie

When a couple decides on a holiday wedding like New Year's Eve, you know it's going to be a wild and unpredictable night full of memories for all. And that's just how I feel about the last wedding in Memphis on 12-31-2010 (or so it was for me, Amy Miller, and Annabella Charles, and Delectables Catering, and Moonshine Lighting).

Just after sunset Micah and Ruthie exchanged their heartfelt vows under a floating arch of Calla Lilies. The colors were fresh and as bold as the venue they chose downtown, Bridges. The staff at Bridges couldn't have been nicer and really helped me and my crew stay safe. As a choice for brides, I love what Bridges stands for and I applaud Ruthie and Micah for bringing their day to such a high spirited, community oriented place.

Ruthie exudes a happiness so true. I absolutely cannot wait to see all of the photographs.

Annabella was kind enough to post a sneak peek (as she usually does) and let me borrow the images for my blog as well. I must also thank Jaime Newsome for her support and help that holiday morning. Lastly, I thank my team which included my husband Wayne (hanging the massive modern wedding arch), Kelly, Kristin, Melissa, and Molly. Thank you all for bringing a beautiful close and grand entrance into 2011! If you are reading this now I would also like to thank you for following the musings of a half mother, half wife, half business owner, and the 150% (you need every bit of it) crazy demanding life of a "flower lady". Yes, someone yelled "hey flower lady!" across a parking lot at me on my birthday!

VIP Magazine: Jenni and Chris

The January issue of VIP Magazine featured some breathtaking photos from the engagement party by the bride's family in honor of Jenni and Chris. The Social Butterflies transformed and coordinated the rooftop affair at the Madison. Photos of the perfect evening were taken by Annabella Charles and featured luxurious white furniture from Mahaffey Tent & Party Rentals. We were hired to help turn up the Miami Chic with hundreds of purple orchids and other modern flowers.

Mark & Crystal: Have Fun and Carry On!

Mark and Crystal were married at the end of June in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Looking back at this day I can't believe they have been married half a year. I suspect they have a loving and lively life together. The wedding was certainly anything but boring! With musical boutonnieres (inspired by Fritts Rosenow of SF) and birch tree decor in tow, my assistant Melissa and I got up at the crack of dawn and drove four hours to the church. We were greeted by the zany groomsmen as well as family and church staff. We never felt anything but welcome in the city that wasn't our own.
After the ceremony we found out that the bridal party had gone to a large fountain in the city and had a battle with the Nerf guns that were a groomsmen gift the night before. As a serious bride, I couldn't have imagined such a thing, but the more I thought about it... why not? It's your day right?
The reception kept with the musical theme and was held in a former recording studio. It was almost like a flash mob in the sense that everyone who attended really knew how to dance. No, I mean they could really dance! Some of Crystal and Mark's friends couldn't even stop themselves from swinging to the DJ's test music during the setup as we put the centerpieces on the table! Oh, and I loved the guitar groom's cake.
After spending the day with a couple's closest family and friends, you get to know them even more. Crystal and Mark surrounded themselves with kind and generous people who were so fun loving. There were no frowns that day even when the couple took a detour to the hospital to pin a boutonniere on their grandfather who had fallen ill the night before. You may also notice the bells on the bouquet that have a special meaning to the bride's family. It was a heartfelt, personalized, and happy union an I enjoyed every minute. I hope you enjoy this peek into their new life together.

P.S. I am now a big fan of the Nerf war idea, what hysterical photos!

French Navy and Gold: Southern Bride Magazine

One of the ways I knew I truly wanted to be a florist is when I still bought wedding magazines after we got married. Photo shoots are one of my favorite parts of being a floral designer. I love being able to create flowers that are unconventional and inspirational to brides and fellow bridal mag-a-holics like myself.

This season's cultural theme for Southern Bride was the reason our team chose the beautiful mid town antique gallery Palladio as the backdrop to a French Fantasy table.

The best part about having a group of vendors you trust is that all of the good ideas are incorporated. A good example is Jaime, Michelle, and Addie from Social Butterflies, who keep up with the latest in rental and linen trends. I learned so much about the gold cap on the table! I had never seen it before the shoot.

As always, Annabella Brandon from Annabella Charles Photography translated our setting into a feast for the eyes. I really tried to think 'inside the box' by making a majority of the floral items in a square shape to mimic the square table. I also created my first broach mini bouquet. Those broaches are addicting ladies!

So without further adieu, here are the faves and details from our ode to the Gold of Versailles France.

When I first met Shannon she was so calm and easy going. I wasn't sure she was even going to hire me because I was so excited and maybe a little too jazzed about doing her wedding flowers. When her wedding day came it was a gorgeous day in East Tennessee and she was a beautiful bride without worry. She truly deserves so much praise for never losing her cool and enjoying the celebration of her love. For me, It was a first time at Carahills II and meeting their friendly staff. I also had fun visiting with my vendor friends at CFY catering.

What a great morning I had today when Shannon told me that the Pink Book had featured her photos! The Pink Book

Home for the Holidays

I delivered some party flowers to a home yesterday. I say 'home' because the family has made their house so inviting and warm and have always treated me with kindness and a full heart. I didn't realize I missed them until I saw them again last night. You can see in the photos of this Christmas party set up that any guest would feel instantly welcome and full of delight. It also doesn't hurt that their decor is like a page out of a Pottery Barn catalog (my favorite home store).

I brought in a golden cherub from my personal collection and full white lilies to create a fragrant front door entrance. The buffet table wasn't yet full of the fabulous food from Club Windward Catering, so you must use your imagination, but isn't that what the holidays are about? Seeing beyond the sparkle and opening your heart and mind to give to others and imagine a better, more bountiful year ahead for all.

This entire year has been a blessing to work with flowers and create memories for my clients and with my staff.

The Bold and the Beautiful: Red and Teal

Courtney and Hal were married last weekend and their wedding colors grew on me each day I came down to my vibrant workshop. Everyone who saw the flowers made a comment and it dawned on me that bold colors work so well in the winter when the leaves are gone and we crave those hot tones.

Michelle from Social Butterflies chose all of the details and I really fell in love with the use of Black and White all around the wedding and reception. In a future post I will show the professional photos of the personal flowers. They were so vivid, I can't wait!

Rice is no longer the proper way to send off today's brides and grooms. One of the best alternatives I have seen is wedding wands. The wands are easy to craft yourself or purchase online and provide just the right amount of flare at the day's end with minimal mess. I have spent my share of time picking rose petals out of wedding and reception grounds to know that most florists, vendors, and venues shy away from them (even though they are very beautiful and romantic) unless a couple is willing to pay for the clean up. Of all the floral designs wreaths are one of my favorites. I LOVE wreaths of all shapes and sizes as well as the various ways to present them. The staff there couldn't be more accommodating and will let you adorn their building with flowers. Music to my ears!

Bottled Beauty: A Table Scape for The Pink Toast

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this past week I was a guest blogger on The Pink Toast. Annabella Brandon and I put together a mini shoot with a DIY theme just for their readers and it was such and honor to be a part of The Pink Toast blog! The primary inspiration was Martha Stewart Living Magazine August 2010. Martha will always be the queen of DIY and inspiration to me.

The long anticipated new issue of Premier Bride is out today and I can't wait to share of my favorite pages from the magazine. Let's begin today's post with Southern Peach. August 5 was the Open House for the Grand Opening of Mrs. Post; a new store for custom invitations, luxury paper goods, and the perfect accessories for all occasions. The open house was hosted by the owners Lindsey Cross and Natalie Chang with the help of Michelle Hope of Social Butterflies. The evening looked like Martha Stewart meets Amy Atlas as we sipped posh fizzies and ate sublime cupcakes, surrounded by the designer creations in the shop.

Annabella Brandon was there to take the most colorful and delicious photos of the evening!!!

I was so proud to be a small part of this day. A nifty idea I came up with: Using mailboxes (re-colored to match the store) for vases. They sat proudly on the ends of the sweets buffet!

The Floating Swan

After the Icelandic wedding I brought home the swan that I had made mostly of Lily petals and orchids. Our neighborhood has a large pond and I had a good feeling that "Svana" (Icelandic female baby name that translates to swan) would be buoyant with her foam and plastic base.

Sure enough my neighbor Monica, who had come and helped with the wedding as well, was present as my husband put Svana in the lake and off she went. Well not really at first. She kind of hovered around and just as we were all talking and ignoring her she set off for the deep water.

It was a great photo op and after spending 2 days in the pond she drifted close enough for me to catch her on Monday. Still looked pretty good too! I was expecting the worst.

Perhaps later in the year I will do a poolside wedding with some other great themed floaters. They are my newest obsession after Svana's success!

Icelandic Pride & The Southern Bride

When Jaime of Social Butterflies first called me to meet with a April and Johann I didn't know a thing about Iceland. Well except the obvious: Bjork. I researched the country and it's landscape, people, and history before designing the first centerpiece. By the time July 24 showed up I was ready to merge Tennessee with Iceland at the Teton Trek at the Memphis Zoo. Of course America has caught up with me a little since the Icelandic volcano became a wonder and nuisance at the same time.

What an experience everyone had last weekend as the couple married next to the Old Faithful-esque geyser in front of the Grand Teton Lodge. Then it was time to party inside. When Johann (groom) first saw the floral version of his Viking shield on the mantle, he gave me the "aww yeah" (universal hand gesture for awesome) and I knew it was a home run.

There were so many details that only someone who knew the couple may truly appreciate. I have always tried to merge good design with something unique that captures the essence of the bride and groom. It was a great compliment when the bride noticed the test tubes incorporated as an homage to her degree in chemistry! I also saw quite a few out of country guests who took photos of the Orange Billed Whooping Swan that is native to Iceland's waters.

Wish Upon a Wedding is growing by leaps and bounds. The next time I blog about this groundbreaking wedding charity, the first and only of it's kind, it will be about our own chapter starting right here in Memphis!

In the mean time there is a lot going on with the numerous cities that have already begun granting wishes. I am talking about the Blissful Wishes Ball. This is a national fundraising event that will have satellite galas in each city with chapters that have launched this year. By November there will be a grand and amazing selection of goods and services, all wedding related, on which people can bid. All of the proceeds go directly to WUW.
If you know anyone or business that is interested in making a difference in the lives of those who have terminal illness and wish to be married this is the time to make that donation! On the flip side, if you are getting married in 2011 and you are already going to hire a fab photographer why not see if there is one available on the auction listing? I am really hoping there will be items that one could not even put a price on, such as a national magazine with a wedding photo spread guaranteed to the highest bidder. How cool would that be?

The Nature of Love: Kate and Spencer - Part 2

Kate's love of flowers (especially hydrangeas) and eclectic decor coupled with Spencer's love of music and nature gave their guests good times for all the senses. Everyone feasted on food nearly too pretty to eat from Club Windward Catering and the beat never stopped thanks to The Memphis Soul Revue. MSR had so much funk the band even got people to dance to a Coldplay song. I had no idea that was possible! I must also say that the Lichterman Nature Center staff especially the site coodinator Bobbi was so helpful and on their game. What a clean and well planned facility!

Later as I was clearing up the wedding site that Kate (my assistant - same name as the bride) and I had earlier installed, the birds and insects serenaded me at sunset. For floral staff there is often a peace after such demanding nuptial schedules. In the silence and scattered rose petals you know that the couple is married, dancing, and surrounded by loved ones and that you were a part of their journey towards new beginnings together.

...Or perhaps it was the Sudafed talking since I had a summer cold. ;)

Either way nature and love are two things that help my business thrive, allow me to create, and keep me energized so I embrace them as much as possible. Make time to take a walk outside and hold some one's hand if you are lucky enough...

The Nature of Love: Kate and Spencer - Part 1

One of the most rewarding things about wedding flowers is when the bride and groom genuinely love your work. After I spent the day and night at the Lichterman Nature Center working watching Kate and Spencer's entire wedding day unfold, they made it a point to tell me how much I was appreciated. That, my friends, made everything worth it even more.

I could probably write and entire blog entry about the oil painting Kate made herself. The artwork, coupled with the greenery of the nature center, and all of our decor brought their motif together beautifully. See for yourself!

I am always ready to try new things. When Brooke and Josh (and Paula the bride's mother) gave the "OK" to Jeff Leatham style wedding flowers I was ready for the challenge. The results: Beauty... and a whole new respect for Jeff Leatham. Whew!

Love & Tulips Part 1: Pink & Orange at the Country Club

Joshua and Brooke now reside in Nashville, but pulled off a fabulous wedding and reception in Memphis this May. How? It's all relative! Thanks to their family and fab coordinators they were able to get the vendors that saw their vision. When I met with the mothers of the bride and groom before the wedding I began to realize that the colors themselves were the theme of the day and created arrangements that reinforced the theme (a far cry from the adjectives I usually hear; vintage, seaside, candy sweet). Thus, the resulting bold orange and pink drapes, cakes, and tulips were as abundant as the good times had by all attending guests. So I shall take a backseat and let most of the photos by Creation Studios speak for themselves.
There are a few back stories for the blog - one of which was their ice sculpture of a daschund Doggie. It was a beloved family pet and that was another new idea for me. Michelle of Social Butterflies, the coordinating and designing team for the event, took a hilarious photo of Brooke giving the poochie a kiss. Also, since we knew Josh was a golfer in Nashville my team created a full floral golf bag on wheat grass. The only non floral items of the display were tees, clubs, and a ball. Thanks for going to the pro shop last minute for those perfect touches Kristin!

Lastly I heard that there were a few guests who had invited their friends (on their cell phones)to come see the designs and flowers. I took that as the ultimate compliment!
One final mention for my floral wholesaler (you know who you are) who got the nearly 1200 tulips so fresh that I had not a worry in the world when all 7 bridesmaids and the bride carried them around for over 3 hours. Not a single bloom popped open; as older tulips tend to do in the intense heat. There were even a few typical florist's summer "no-no's" like tulip boutonnieres for the groom and ring bearer, and a bride's bouquet of 30 two feet long french tulips! WOW!

Your Wedding Day Magazine & The SFDWG 2010

Last year just 2 days before I moved from California to Memphis, instead of packing I was running around San Francisco and 1 Fort Mason at a launch party for the San Francisco Dream Wedding Giveaway 2010. How could I not? Liz Guthrie (the founder) is a dear friend with a HUGE charitable vision. It was such a great night and as a gift to the event and team I fashioned 3 tables with designs and flowers I was sure no one had seen before. The most prominent was the replica of the logo Astrid Mueller had created for the national Contest.

With the help of my husband and Monica ( and later Krystan and Sean) we set up a grand 8 ft table sized Golden Gate Bridge of flowers, wood, Ethereal Decor crystals, and lights (and a few of my son's matchbox cars). The results are something I am still very proud of.

I found this article last week after purchasing YWD magazine in a local craft store. The funny part of the story is that after I ooohed and aaahed over the entire gloriously crafted magazine shoots and wished I could have been a part of it I reached page 180. There was a story about the contest, Liz, the winning couple, and the sponsors. What a great way to find photos you didn't even know had been published! Thanks to Lilia Ahner, the shots used truly captured the essence of the evening and all the details of that unique table. I am including a sketch so you can see behind the scenes of what things look like when I try and explain them to clients and coordinators. I think I was spot on.
Three Cheers for the winning couple, their new married lives together, and my dear friend Liz who gave them all of this by creating such a wonderful contest! In case you didn't know, she also founded a national charity after feeling the need to marry ALL of the heartwarming contest non-winners. Memphis chapter is in the works so stay tuned...

Garden Wedding at the Dixon Gallery Part 3: Outdoor Tent

This tent deserved it's own post. Clint and the Mahaffey team outdid themselves once again! I was honored enough to have one of his crew members hang my delicate fresh Mokara and Cymbidium orchid chandelier over the dance floor in the clear tent at Karen and Glen's reception. It felt like putting a star on a Christmas tree.

Garden Wedding at the Dixon Gallery Part 2: Indoor Room

This post continues the celebration of Karen and Glen, a couple that gave me the creativity to make this reception so dreamy and taught me the exact Hot Orange of a Kubota Tractor. "Kubota Orange" as I will forever be calling the Cartegena Roses used, was one of the focal colors in the arrangements, linens, and draping in the clear tent. It was accented by coppery orchids and warm mercury glass vases. What a refreshing combination! Social Butterflies, Mahaffey Tent and Party Rentals, CFY Catering, and Moonshine Lighting did another fab job as a team on this long hot day. We all sweat but did not complain. Not a single member of my team told me how many bugs they encountered or how hot they were. Thank you Wayne, Kate, Kristin, Melissa, Molly, and Latasha for your tireless efforts. You deserve a lot of credit.
Annabella Brandon stopped by just before the guests started making their way down the Dixon's famous garden paths. In her usual glowing vibrant magic way, she translated our hard day's work into pixels of splendor. These photos are the inside room at the Dixon Garden.

Garden Wedding at the Dixon Gallery Part 1

A wonderful thing about coming back to Memphis is that even though I am not new to the area per say, each venue is new to me. This was the first Haute Horticulture wedding and reception at the Dixon Gallery and Garden. It is beautiful, the staff is so accommodating, and the flora and fauna is perfectly maintained.

Our bride chose to avoid the hottest part of the day by having an early morning wedding and a 7pm reception. We kept the colors in lighter shades of yellow, peach, green, and cream for the A.M ceremony and vamped it up later around sunset. Delicious details include a sculpted petal aisle, a natural willow arch, and petal cones on the chair backs.

This will have to be a two part entry because there are so many wonderful photos and stories to share. The photos you see here were taken mostly by one of my assistants Kristin Wolter. I forgot my camera in all the sunrise packing. The morning team included my husband Wayne, Kate, Kristin, and a new member Latasha. We constructed everything on site for a one of a kind garden arch and stunning backdrop to a wedding.
I must also mention that this was a Social Butterflies production as well as a Mahaffey Tent and Party Rentals construction. I love working with them both.

Haute Horticulture Shines in Contest

Recently the company Ethereal Decor had a contest and I happened upon the results while looking at their stunning inventory. It seems that Haute Horticulture was 2nd only to an event that was featured on Platinum Weddings. If I had known I was up against an existing TV show entry for best use of their real crystal strands and products, I may have thought twice about entering our stunning photos from Amethyst and Paul's jewel toned wedding. But it turns out our photo is featured on the front page (with proper credits soon to follow).

Ethereal Decor is the best source for real Swarovski crystals, drops, and chains. I use them primarily for my arrangements and chandeliers. One might worry about leaking and industry secret, but after their feature on the WE network's Platinum Weddings I don't think it's a secret anymore.

What an honor. Thanks Ethereal Decor!!

Sunny Yellow Wedding

On a sunny day this past Saturday the Haute Horticulture crew and I set up a very happy wedding. The couple Stephanie and Jacob could not have been more adorable and this bold color fit their personality to a tee! The day was a bit hot (and I jokingly say "Haute" too) but when the sun started it's path toward the horizon, the bride and groom were married under the wooden Chuppah hand crafted by Mike, Stephanie's stepfather. I am still kicking myself for not taking photos of that beautiful structure. I also missed the bridesmaids bouquets, the cutest flower girl in a tutu carrying a flower wand, and the bride and groom! - So I will just have to wait patiently for Christen Jones to work her photography magic.

As for the reception, Gail and Mandy (bride's family) were fully supportive and uber creative when it came to all the details. I was along to help, but was speechless when I opened a package that revealed such things as custom tissue boxes with photo covered sides (made by Kleenex!). There were just too many great ideas to mention in one blog.

Stephanie and Jacob had a sweet bar which was absolutely stunning in those vivid yellows, blacks, and whites. My favorite candy: Black wax mustaches! I'd better get mine out of my purse before I lose it.

While guests were enchanted with the endless activities, such as writing a message for the couple and hanging it in a wish tree, they enjoyed the amazing catering services of Delectables. There were fabulous fruits & finger foods, tiny milk shakes and desserts, freshly spun cotton candy cones, and the southern necessities of lemonade and tea. It was nearly impossible to resist eating some of their treats so I instead distracted myself by manning the DIY photo booth; complete with damask background and a trunk full of props and hats. I think I had as much fun as the guests striking silly poses!

The reception also boasted the most beautiful ruffled cake by Myra of Designs in Sugar, while the tent itself became a magical backdrop with the hard work of Mahaffey Tent & Party Rentals. Team Mahaffey hung the lanterns, pitched tents, and set up the rentals that tied whole event together. (Thank you for the help Clint!) When I arrived to the venue it was nearly unrecognizable with the structures and decor. Mahaffey truly transforms everyday spaces into extraordinary places. - Ooh, maybe I have just come up with a new slogan for them.

Finally, a huge (H U G E) thank you is owed to Kate and Melissa who worked so hard and without complaint in the 95 degree heat of the day, (and in all black clothes no less). I could go on and on about the wedding and the people who made it a success but I will simply let the photos I do have speak for themselves.

A $500 Flower

Every Day I learn something new in life and flowers, so when my neighbor asked me this past weekend to help her wrap a $500 flower in cellophane I was ready and curious! She had long ago learned a technique to make roses out of paper currency and created a $500 rose for her daughter's UT graduation. What a great idea and what a lucky recipient! Here is a phone photo of the most expensive flower I have ever wrapped. Enjoy!

Last Tuesday I had an amazing day! We worked at the Hunt-Phelan House downtown Memphis to create stunning photos for Premier Bride's August issue. This was by far one of my favorite photos shoots. The proofs are now being processed by the capable and talented Annabella Jackson from Asian Bees Photography. She posted these delicious photos on her blog shortly after the shoot and just had to share them with you. They only make me hungry to see all of the carefully planned details involved in the day. Spring Recap: Part 4 FCA Banquet

When approached by a client to make a few arrangements for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Fundraising Banquet, I was more than happy to be a part of their event. While setting up the flowers I was given genuine heart felt thanks from the team members of this organization and just felt good about the experience. I only wish I could have hear the encouraging words and life's story from the University of Georgia's head coach Mark Richt as he was their guest speaker. In honor of Coach Richt, UGA colors adorned the head table in Red, White, and Black. I hope he liked it!

Spring Recap: Part 3 Luncheon at The DoubleTree

The DoubleTree Downtown:

A gem that not everyone may know about, the DoubleTree Hotel is conveniently in Downtown Memphis near the RedBirds Stadium, Rendezvous, and an array of unique things that our city has to offer. The staff at the DoubleTree is SO wonderful! What an amazing eye opening experience. We were all treated a southern inspired but Asian updated lunch menu and I ATE EVERY BITE. The new Executive Chef, Kaia Brewer created an array of mouth watering food sculptures on dinnerware. From the berry salad, to the pork chops and Asian potatoes, to the "Strawberries Three Ways" we ate so well that there wasn't much talking. That's when you know it's good! As dessert came out so did the camera phones and that's when you know it's beautiful too! The facilities at the Doubletree are perfect for weddings and large meetings and we learned about their in house staff for lighting and catering.

Luckily Jay Johnson of Jay C. Johnson Photography and Ande Demetriou of Gemini Multimedia were among the guests so we have photos and videos of the whimsical decor I provided as well as my shabby phone pics of the afternoon's fun.

As for the Flowers: There were over 500 mini Narcissus each bunched and leaning out of white ceramic rectangles, and at the center of the four tables was a display of Forsythia. All of these flowers are very dear to me because of their seasonality. I won't be able to work with them again until next March. Good thing I had an excuse this Spring!

Spring Recap: Part 2 JDRF Promise Ball

When the Social Butterflies asked me to help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with their 40th anniversary Promise Ball on April 10th, I had no idea how close to my heart it would become. After the meetings and designs and deliveries were all said and done I was honored with an invitation to celebrate the charity, their cause, and help raise donations that make it possible to fight against Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes is scary, it is real, and it is something that alters not just the diabetic, but their entire families lives forever. And for one night those families and children were able to come together at the Historic Peabody and be embraced by the people of Memphis. It was very touching and I will never forget it.

The theme of the party was the Super 70's and since JDRF was founded in 1970 the peace signs and groovy decor was very fitting. Even some of the guests showed up in the hippest of hippie-wear. Here are a few amature photos I took before the evening began. The HH team consisted of me, Kelly S., Kate G., Melissa L., and Molly who tirelessly worked on the flowers and volunteered their time and energy (on a Saturday no less!). Behind the scenes, my husband and Bluff City Refrigeration expertly installed our newest walk in cooler to keep the flower-power going. Thank you ladies (and gentlemen) for being a part of the success that JDRF had. They were able to raise over $360,000 that evening.

Spring Recap: Part 1 Family Photos

There was so much going on in my world as well as Haute Horticulture this past month. So much in fact that I wasn't able to blog as often as usual. This is part 1 of my Spring recap.

Asian Bees Photography: Photos with the Family We had the pleasure of having our family portraits taken by Annabella Brandon in March at the Botanic Gardens of Memphis. We had the perfect day with just enough sun through the clouds as our family walked through their fields of Daffodils. I had brought my own bouquet just for kicks and even dressed the 'boys' in coordinating colors and yet my son loved the entire adventure. Annabella had great suggestions and went with whatever the mood called for. The images she captured will be treasured by my family forever.

If you want to know the secret behind this amazing photographer: Annabella is easy going, sweet, visionary, and talented but extremely young for her skills. Country Club Reception

This early Spring reception had an amazing display of Gypsophila. Also known as Baby's Breath, this flower has been sneaking back into the designs featured by Martha Stewart Weddings and most recently Pacific Weddings Magazine. I proposed plumes of large "New Love" brand Baby's Breath on top of amazing white glass trumpet vases made in Poland. Inside the vases were LED lights that glowed the color of eggplant/purple after the sun set outside the gorgeous ballroom. The head table had a large a bold centerpiece of over 60 white Agapanthus. I feel that these flowers reflected the Colonial Country Club's crystal laden chandeliers. Event design was by Michelle of Social Butterflies and lighting by Moonshine Lighting. I must mention the great idea of a Girl Scout Cookie Buffet too (by Michelle)! Love it!!

Since I am Irish I could not let Saint Patrick's Day slip away today without mentioning my love for Ireland. It's people, history, landscape, and beauty inspire me like no other place in the world - and I haven't even been able to visit yet!
Even my wedding 6 years ago had so many Irish elements. The most noteworthy being the clover plants incorporated into the centerpieces (some are still alove out there) and the Irish dancing girls from the Inis Acla School in Memphis. What a wonderful country! I love Ireland!! Is Gra' liom Eire!

Vignette #5 White Fantasy Table

When asked the question, "What would someone in Hollywood do?" this is what we decided on. All white for the modern luxury appeal with a serpentine "S" shaped table, custom linens, and a 9 foot "S" shaped trellis of branches and orchids. With over the top crystal beads and Lucite menus, extremely high end hairs and a dash of blue lighting, this was one of my favorites of the evening. Depending on the flash use, the photos here vary from dramatic to detailed. The professional pics are under wraps until we receive word on publication.

Vignette #4 Moonlight & Mannequins

A concept that was not new, Moonlight and Mannequins was inspired by and event that happened in San Francisco called Una Bella Sera and I just wanted to bring a touch of that to Memphis. It's a small table that could be used in the daytime as a theme for a bridal luncheon or at night it could be vamped up with many candles and flowers to create a formal but feminine theme.

Vignette #3 Crimson Candleabra

The lighting on this table was so red and deep that in person Crimson Candelabra demanded your attention. Upon approaching the table one's eyes were kept busy taking in every detail. I have to admit if I lived in fantasy-budget land I would have added hundreds more Freedom Red Roses and amazing black centered Anemones everywhere(a personal favorite). But that's what I love about my profession; it is fun, a creative challenge, and there is always something to learn from every job to make you a better florist. Even as the money crunch of 2010 is keeping flowers to a minimum there are ways to make big statements with less.

These candelabras (sacrificed by Social Butterflies) held black matte spray paint so well. Now I want to cover all my gorgeous silver items in wild colors! I will restrain myself for now....

I must also mention that the rose balls you see in the corners were made by the Social Butterflies. They are silk and reusable and if you would like to know their secret recipe, visit the SB Blog.

Vignette #2 Bird Boutique & Shabby Chic

Shabby Chic was a blast to make! Just ask Jaime from Social Butterflies, who showed me her "find of the century" the morning of the Meet Mahaffey party. She found this old chair with a wooden birdhouse on top of it {on the "take me" side of her neighbor's curb}. We sprayed it to the proper colors and brought it right into the vignette. I love stories like that.

This table has a lot of details starting with the centerpiece which is flowing from a vintage tea tin (my new favorite piece) I found on Etsy. The centerpiece is held on a curved cake plate that has streamers of ribbon each ending in a tiny cameo or rose painted cameo. There are mini tart dishes that house flower filled pies and for a place card, the top of a jelly filled mason jar. Even the fabric is perfectly turquoise and lemon yellow rosettes!

I love the old windows and birdcages hung in the background. True story: The big grid in the back is from my largest window in the log cabin!!! Ever since we popped out the frame I have been wanting to hang something from it. I'm a sucker for suspended arrangements. The dainty flowers include some of the first ranunculus of the season and acacia. Add in the stock and freesia and this was the most fragrant table around. I hope to do more of this theme in the summer; it's a great look.

Vignette #1: Beautiful Butterflies

Since I have been working with the Social Butterflies on the Mahaffey Project I have been noticing the actual butterfly pattern more often in stores and merchandise. I am always that way with a wedding theme. If a bride loves copper, then I will stop at all things copper in the months preceding, during, and proceeding wedding. It takes a while to deprogram my mind from looking out for anything that matches the theme that the happy couple might want to have included in their special day. It's just the way I am.

That said, I have a feeling after this table and working with the fluttering ladies, I will have a penchant for anything beautiful and 4 winged for a long time.

Beautiful Butterflies table has a modern linen that even reflects the wings of this creature and all the flowers are such that a butterfly couldn't resist them! On the chandelier, a vibrant hanging teardrop shaped orange butterfly "ball" is made with Mokara Orchids, Orange Tulips, and Voodoo Roses. The Purple leis were hand sewn from hundreds Purple Mokara orchids. The whole table was fragrant and lovely! Michelle even got in on the flower action and hung extra orchids on the chandelier and placed them on the napkins. Those extra touches are one of the best parts about having a coordinator on your wedding day team to make sure every detail is the best it can be.

"Meet Mahaffey!" Open House

At the end of February I was honored to be a creative and floral part of the Meet Mahaffey Open House. There were at least 250 of Memphis' finest vendors there on that unsuspecting Tuesday evening to see what new rentals and amazing structures Mahaffey Tents now has to offer their clients.

Once you walked the red carpet entrance to the warehouse office, all signs of business disappeared into a display of 20 ft backgrounds, flowers, food, and decor at every turn! Clint the general manager and his staff did an amazing job. Moonshine Lighting set the mood with an assortment of colors, shapes, and a network of floor to ceiling effects. Teaming with the Social Butterflies who coordinated and designed the event, Haute Horticulture created the florals and floral accessories for 5 vignettes, 3 lounges, and a bar. Between the planning and the actual event, it came and went so fast. Luckily Donny G. of Creation Studios was able to capture the moments!

There were 3 main lounges and an assortment of mini lounge tables and chairs around the massive center room. It was the perfect layout for munching and mingling.

Let the Sun Shine!

Let's take a side trip from the polished pinks and purples emerging from the bridal magazines in 2010 and show a little sun. Sun-flower that is. This yellow gem is another part of the Radonich Ranch Series photographed by Chyna Darner. Love this theme! It is called Sun Country on the website and makes me feel a little warmer on a cold day. The ball you see on the top of the centerpiece could easily be floating in a pool at a wedding. How fun would that be?

This month was extremely busy for me and yet full of wonderful opportunities for the coming summer. Since I wasn't able to blog much this month let's have a recap:

First, I am proud to announce that Haute Horticulture is going to be creating the flowers for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation 40th Anniversary Fundraiser on April 10th and the famous Peabody Hotel in Downtown Memphis.

Second, after the amazing party "Meet Mahaffey" on Tuesday the 23rd of this month, Haute Horticulture is on the preferred vendor list located on their website: Mahaffey.

Third, there will be a launch party for the Wish Upon a Wedding Tennessee Chapter this summer and I will be involved in the event as well as the chapter. I can't wait to see what the team brings to this worthwhile charity and to Tennessee residents.

Fourth, I have quite a few weddings booked and more than half are to work with the uber fabulous ladies of Social Butterflies for Wedding Season 2010. They have been instrumental in my leap into the heart of the Memphis wedding scene. I really enjoy their creativity, teamwork, and organization. Meet Lilia Ahner

In San Francisco two days before I moved to Tennessee I had the pleasure of meeting Lilia Ahner at the Mixer for the SF Dream Wedding Giveaway. She is the official photographer for the contest and the $100,000 wedding that is given to a lucky couple.

I saw her walking around that night in October (and knew her name on the wedding circuit) so didn't want to interrupt her work as she shot frame after frame. I am so grateful she introduced herself because I may have been to nervous to bother her! With her red streaked hair and friendly smile she said she wished Haute Horticulture was around when she got married because she loved the Punk Rock Table theme I had created. That made my month!!!

Last night I was contacted by a fan of Rock and Roll Bride as she had seen the photos of the Punk Table on Lilia's Web Site. I had no idea (shame on me)! The photos were linked as part of a "Thursday Treats" segment on the Rock and Roll Bride site. What an honor!

The 101st Post on the Petal Press

When I started this blog I honestly didn't know where it would lead. I still find an endless amount of flower and event related topics to share and it seems even more so after my transition to Memphis TN. What has made this possible is friends and family. I cannot say this enough. When starting a business, support is key. As I see Haute Horticulture grow, it shows how much love and help I have really received.

As is customary every New Year one makes resolutions and plans for a happy future. This week after meeting clients for the 2010 wedding season I have also started the remodel to office and studio under our Log Cabin. I can't wait work in a space designed just for Haute Horticulture!

Other plans include collaborating with exceptional Mid South event planners and vendors this year. There is excitement in the air over all the new ideas and inspiration that will be generated by our hard work. As always, I will spotlight the best of the best ideas and people I love to work with in the coming months. Thank you for reading and being a part of something so dear to me. 2010 season here we come!

At the wedding show one of the most popular questions asked of me was, "What purple flowers are available for my wedding date?" and the dates ranged from June through December. I have to admit I was prepared for almost every question, but that wasn't one of them. After the show was over I thought of so many more purple flowers than what I had mentioned in the limited time I was given to talk with each bride-to-be.
I would like now highlight some of my favorites to work with n each season. Not all of the flowers listed are in the photographs below.

Photos from the Bridal Show

The Premier Bridal Show was great! I did have a tiny cold that I was getting over, but the show really had me full of energy and hope for a creative and full scheduled 2010 wedding season. I met new vendors and reconnected with old friends who "did" my wedding in Memphis 5 years ago. That was a real treat and now that Haute Horticulture officially joined the Memphis scene I was welcomed with true Southern Hospitality.

Above are some photos of the flat screen TV used for the slide show of weddings and flowers. The difference between my flatscreen and all of the others that were in nearly every booth; over 350 carnations! See for yourself. We also assembled some modern arrangements to compliment the flora-vision. I really liked the all white table. It was complete with the 100 roses that were given away to the brides who talked to me at the show. What a Sunday! How can I top that this weekend? Probably by resting!

I must also mention the volunteers that made the show a success and kept me on time: Wayne, Chrystal, and Melissa I thank you from my heart. Also, my mother, as always, by supporting the HH team on the home front while watching my son. Photo below: Us three ladies before noon.

The Premier Bridal Wedding show is almost here in Memphis (This Sunday from 12-4pm) and I am so excited I can hardly wait. I have a secret to share: I have never done a wedding show before. Now before Wayne and I got married we attended one and were actually in the wedding dress/tux fashion walk. We were recruited by our bridesmaid dress store (I'm still not sure what they were thinking; haha!) and had a great time. I'm not sure where those photos are and that's probably a good thing.

Last February I had the privilege of attending a show at the luxurious Four Seasons in San Francisco and all of the biggest names were there. It was a blast and I can hardly wait to be a part of Premier Bride this Sunday and meet some brides-to be! They are just so excited about weddings; almost as excited as I am and that's hard to find. These are my people and I promise there are many visual surprises in store on my corner of the show floor. See you there!!

Hard at Work & the 4 Foot Long Vase

While hard at work for the next event (The Premier Bridal Show January 10 in Memphis) I received some great photos from the hosts of the recently featured Holiday Party. I just had to share this great pic of the 4ft long vase that we filled with crystal deco "ice" beads, submersible lights, and just 5 spider mums for a simple yet impactful arrangement. I loved it! What a great vase to have in my collection now.
Here is another photo of us "Hard at Work" which prompted me to go back into my wedding snapshot archives only to find I don't have enough of these backstage moments. New Year's resolution for Haute Horticulture is: More team photos! Anca is one of a group of people that has helped me along the long road of event installations. If I had the right photos I could blog for hours about the sacrifices and help of others for this business and for me.

In Season: Amaryllis

There is nothing quite like the quadruple trumpeted flowers that pop from the top the long stalk of an amaryllis. They are most abundant in the winter making them all the more lovable in the cold landscape of December and January. I was able to use a bright red variety and give them away as little tokens of affection this Christmas. The best part of giving them away is that you know they will be flowering for another week, giving the recipient a new view of the arrangement every day!

Swanky Seasonal Decor

Every December while people are decorating trees, homes, tables, and parties around the world the same questions come up. What colors am I going to use? What theme am I going to have? Will I get a new set of ornaments or use the same decorations I keep in storage? In the case of Della and Richard's home, Della had a clear vision. She wanted something new, fresh, modern, and with enough "Umph" to make it special for her holiday party. She also had a color theme starting with her Christmas tree in hues of copper, teal, apple, and hint of silver. These colors complimented her home as well.

This house was deserving of arrangements and props that defied gravity and had very hard shapes in soft colors. I included everything! 4 ft vases, hanging glass balls, extra long flowers, and a crystal tree. All of the elements tied in from room to room in a dazzling display of the new floral style.

There was a repetitive theme of ball shapes and you could find them out in the open (flower and moss balls in bowls) or hiding in arrangements. The buffet table boasted 5 mammoth white double peonies in full bloom as part of an arrangement with coordinating flowers. The centerpiece rested under a famous chandelier that Della purchased and embellished herself. You may recognize this as the very same one that hung in the home on the movie "The Firm". I think that is so cool!

Starting with her sleek slate mantle, I shaped long white callas to bow over their vases in a dramatic curve. To retain the original feel of her home we blended the collection that normally occupies the space with the new flowers and the result was asymmetrical and awesome.
Next I mimicked the chic kitchen lighting with a wild arrangement that had 5 aluminum wired tentacles that held glass test tubes. In each tube was a stark white spider mum. I think these polished aluminum vases are so contempo!

Lastly, I could never resist a little bit of organic sculpture, so I made a friend out of flowers and galax leaves for their pet turtle "Sparky" as well as a little area for the floral turtle to live.

There were so many floral touches that my friend Anca and I installed to cause wonder at every turn. Also Anca took a majority of these photos. I thank her for her help Saturday and look forward to seeing photos of the actual event with the lights lower. I also thank Della and Richard for inviting us in their home. What a privilege.

Beautiful Boxwood

When asked to decorate the home of Della and Richard for the holidays and later for their upcoming gathering, I just couldn't resist. Their style is modern and polished and they are fun to work with! Della really wanted to add some holiday cheer outside in the color palate she chose for this year: teal, apple green, copper, and a touch of silver. The boxwood wreaths and wood curl topiaries are only the beginning of what will await the party guests inside the house next weekend. Working with pounds of boxwood an making hand tied wreaths is a skill I truly enjoy using. If I could, I would teach classes for those who share my interest. Perhaps next winter?.... In the meantime I can't wait to blog part 2 of this Contempo Christmas theme with the next phase - fresh flower installation!

Love in Lace: Radonich Ranch Part 4

Without spilling too many photos of the vintage looks created by the team at Radonich Ranch, I can't help but show some more soft and wistful images. This vignette is partly a table scape that reflects some of the amazing lace tablecloths and blankets that Robin now has in her antique store/bridal boutique. I love the colors and the feeling I get from the images in a story board.

(This collection also features a full yet delicate cascade bouquet. This is something that is certain to keep showing up in future bridal trends for 2010 and possibly beyond. I already have brides asking for shapes that are less "round" and more textured.)

My hope is that this inspires the brides out there who are ready to cut their wedding from the cloth of vintage and the still enjoy comforts of our modern world.

Sugar Country: Radonich Ranch Part 3

This next set of photos from the Radonich Ranch series is just too sweet not to post. The model is so naturally beautiful in the vintage dress and hand tied and natural bouquet. Whenever I hear brides say they want their bouquet to look like it was "hand picked on their way through a meadow", this is what I visualize. Most floral work in weddings can be so structured and this is a truly serene contrast.

In events and photo shoots, typically the more natural and loose a hairstlye or dress or floral arrangement looks, the more skill it took to create. Amburlee Price proves this when she created this hair updo that looks so perfectly easy and flowing but I assure you I could never do this in hours with my own hair! Hairstylists are just one part of the magic that happens when you hired trusted professionals to make all your event details look seamless and effortless.

Dusty Pinks: Radonich Ranch Part 2

When Monica and I started creating the flowers for this shoot we wanted to capture the softness and beauty of dusty pinks and all of the shades in a hydrangea at the end of the season. This bouquet perfectly embodies the fabulous range of the hydrangea itself as it also brings so much detail out of the other flowers. I enjoy photos shoots because there are no limits on the creativity or whimsy of a moment. Model Anastasiya looked so free and happy standing barefoot and yet I would have never done such a thing when I was a bride myself!

Again I must mention that these photos are so true to the day because of Chyna Darner's talent.

Radonich Ranch Photo Shoot is Here!

I received the most wonderful DVD in the mail from Chyna Darner this week! I will feature a montage every other day of this amazing photo shoot at Radonich Ranch. It started with a sunny day that was soon filled with happy vendors and models (as well as honey bees) buzzing around the property getting made up and dressed, setting up props, posing, and photographing. I had such a great time I didn't want to leave!

This is the first session of the day inspired by the vintage dresses of Robin from Recapture Vintage Bridal Designs and my grandmother's peach cameo. Hair and makeup was by the talented Amburlee Price and hosting by the exclusive event coordinator of Radonich Ranch, Marky Carr. Working on all florals along side me was Monica Kau from Signature Bloom.

The Flirty Guide reported on the San Francisco Dream wedding giveaway earlier in October and I must have missed Stacie Tamaki's awesome recap of the evening's events on October 6 at 1 Fort Mason. It was so surprising to see my Golden Gate Bridge in the article, as well as my Pink Rock table and my beloved mentor Nancy Liu Chin setting up her mouth watering popcorn display. These photos remind me of my dear friends in San Francisco and San Jose. I am sure they are going full steam ahead into the holiday hustle and bustle of The City by the Bay.

Bough Frau

Loosely translated into "tree branch lady" the woman behind Bough Frau is more than just a maven of nature's bounty. Nikki Pham is opening a storefront in Galena, IL this weekend as well as a website that helps us decorate our homes and lives. New businesses are so exciting to me and with a slogan like, "Embrace Your Space" how can one resist the temptation to do just that with dried naturals, wreaths, and German themed decor. As Bough Frau grows and prospers, I will give updates on this exciting new store. Both Wreaths and Nikki are dear to my heart!

New Beginnings

It has been a while since my last blog post and I assure you I have been both hard at work and extremely busy with the move to Tennessee. The last month in the San Francisco area was a wild one with photo shoots, weddings, and parties galore. I cannot wait to share all of the fabulous pics with you! The DVD's are soon to be rolling into my mailbox with photographs galore by some of the best in The Biz of the Bay Area. Since the pro photos are in transit, I will instead share a photo from the inside of my new home. We have chosen a "fixer-upper" in the form of a beautiful and semi-famous log home in Arlington, TN that used to be know as The Lodge at Hickory Withe. Perhaps the family will come up with an updated name for out little piece of history. More details to come as I unpack all of Haute Horticulture's treasured inventory and organize it into the new studio located underneath the lodge...

This sign was made for Bena and Ed to make sure their guests knew exactly where to be on their special day. Bouquet of the Week: Irish Lace and Lily of the Valley

This week's feature bouquet is from the Ireland Meets Italy Wedding in May. Terry Way took this stunning photo of the bride holding her bouquet of sweet pea, lisianthus, beautiful swan garden roses, bells of Ireland, and lily of the valley. Every flower had a special meaning to Catherine and even the pearl bracelet in the photo has a story behind it.

The bride had taken a necklace, that used to belong to her dear grandmother, to a jeweler who broke her heart by saying that it was not worth the time to repair or remake. Catherine's friend, who also made all the necklaces for the bridal party, was able to restring the sentimental pearls and give her a special bracelet for her wedding day!

I just love a good wedding story!

The photos below are of the bride and groom before they saw each other for the first time on their wedding day. Daniel also had a sentimental boutonniere that held a silver claddaugh in the front of lily of the valley to match the bride's bouquet.

The photos from the Ireland Meets Italy wedding are now on the Haute Horticulture website! Being Irish myself, I get a little misty eyed thinking about the bagpiper as he played in front of Catherine down the wedding aisle and then played the couple out of St. Mary's together. Then the entire crowd of 150 guests followed the piper through Los Gatos to a cozy park for pre-cocktail refreshments! This wedding had it all: perfect weather, a happy couple, beautiful scenery, great food and spirits at Testarossa Winery, and (one of my favorite things) a candy buffet. It was non-stop photo ops for everyone involved!

Red Roses Renewed

I know it isn't Valentine's Day just yet, but I had some leftover roses from a client sample this week and made an arrangement in the name of modern love. With only maidenhair fern, lily grass, and red local roses this crimson and clover gem sits pretty in its silver vase.

I still don't know exactly what I will title the wedding from this past weekend. It was a beautiful blend of a garden wedding with Asian elements and Chinese banquet reception. The colors were hues of purple, blue, copper, and orange. Often the night before the big day I will send the coordinator, in this case Liz Guthrie of San Jose Wedding Consultants, an iphone photo of all the flowers sitting pretty in the cooler. I do this for few reasons:

1. It's a sneak peek at what is to come for the next day

2. It assures her I am ready to go for the wedding

3. It's fun to see all the flowers waiting for their big debut.

Above is an example of one of the photos I sent her in the middle of the night. I'm just too excited to keep them to myself!

Lemon Drop Dahlias

It's no secret that I love candy. Perhaps that is why I use it in floral designs and inspiration boards all the time. Love, like candy and flowers, is sweet! I think candy buffets, soda stations, chocolate tasting tables, and all the like are fabulous additions to any wedding or reception. I noticed at a recent wedding that the candy buffet we set up was most appreciated at the end of the night. It kept dancing guests energized and gave them something to snack on after the food was no longer available. Of course, nothing is better that well made wedding cake, but these additional sweets will only enhance any celebration!

That said, I offer a sweet centerpiece that is a bit unique. As a designer I am constantly trying new shapes, sizes, and mediums. The dahlias and rose petals look a bit lamp-like with a candy lemon drop filled acrylic post. This would be funky for a cocktail area especially if I decided to light them from within. Enjoy!

Bouquet of the Week: Dahlias

Our bi-weekly feature is also a flower that is truly at it's peak this month. Dahlias as small as daisies and as large as dinner plates (literally!) are all over the market in their seemingly endless variety of bold and beautiful hues. The only colors unavailable are blue and black and the maroon dahlias can be very close to black when they want to.

Today's feature bouquet is a yellow that is so bright it borders on florescent. It is paired with some viburnum berries and grosgrain ribbon. The flower heads are so large that nothing else is necessary to make this 7 flower bunch large and in charge!

Fun with Light

Most of the time floral designers and wedding coordinators spend a bit of effort convincing a bride that the money she invested in lush flowers and interesting detail will go to waste if the venue doesn't have good lighting. With that in mind, this small cocktail centerpiece is one of the few that look better in the dark. What you may notice in the photo is that there still no true substitute for hired spot lighting and up-lighting because the rose is still in the shadows. I just liked the way the crystal and light outline the shape of a beautiful red petals. This was made for my cousin to give to a friend. I thought I'd share this little abstract idea for the week ahead.

Inspiration Board: Golden Garden Roses

As promised I have a small inspiration board for the golden garden roses in the bouquet of the week. I used the same variety on a metal fashion form and the results are as sweet and feminine as the roses themselves. I wish garden roses were a little more hearty so I could use them in abundance for brides, but their delicate nature is part of the allure and rarity that makes them so very special.

I am not ashamed that roses were on the top of my favorite wedding flower list when I first started planning my own event. And why not? They are available most of the year, have a great fragrance, and are beautiful yet inexpensive. What is most amazing about roses is the huge variety that is in the world today and how every color, texture, and size is unique. Today's bi-weekly feature is made with local golden yellow roses, freesia, stock, and a personal favorite; garden roses. These delicate beauties are packed with petals and when I work with them I wonder, "Is this what heaven smells like?". Enjoy the bouquet that is as fragrant as it it lovely! A matching golden rose inspiration board is in the works for this coming week...

A Japanese Master: Keiko Okada

Keiko Okada was a featured florist at this year's AIFD conference and show in Kansas City. She was able to stop by San Francisco and to our humble school auditorium for a Sunday morning demonstration of her work and her style. She is Cheif Designer at the Mami Flower Design School of Japan. My attitude towards floral art will forever be changed by this amazing experience. I am so grateful that my friend Monica was generous enough to give me a ticket to the show.
Keiko uses all natural objects as mechanics, often splitting bamboo and other harder materials to create a natural and minimalist design that still commands a large presence. Here are some photos of the show. I am so inspired! I hope you are too.

Above, a tree is split and placed in a vessel of water with no other mechanic to hold it upright.

Here Keiko is using unopened chopsticks to extend the sides of a glass vase.

This is one of my favorites; a floating island of wildflowers that spins in the water if you touch it.

This is also so simple in its beauty, a vessel that is entirely interlocking parts and reminiscent of a boat.

Fruit Topiary

I could just eat this beautiful and nearly 4 foot fruit and flower topiary that was made this week in my studio. This giant cone is composed of ball and informal dahlias, roses, clementine oranges, ranier cherries, a few alstomeria, palm tree berries, pom pon mums, and some boxwood. The form was handmade "old school" style from chicken wire. If I wanted to be truly traditional I would have simply packed it with moss as well. I love topiaries (especially live plant topiaries) almost as much as wreaths! Enjoy the bounty of summer in the colors of fall. Autumn is not too far away!

In Season: Blue Hydrangea

It is time to start another new feature that I have been posting for a while but didn't have an official name. The feature In Season starts off with one of the best blooms of summer; Blue Hydrangea. Thanks to local growers this boisterous bunch of flowers can be very affordable and bring arrangement costs down. It's bold, big, bountiful in July, and it's a beautiful BLUE!

This centerpiece was made for my dear friend Karina. Her daughter is now 4 and had a party to celebrate with her friends. Happy Birthday Alyssa!!
